Dr. Myava Clark was deeply honored to be featured in Growth Illustrated’s recent profile. As she looks back on her path from respiratory therapist to advocate for neurodivergent children, she’s reminded that our greatest challenges often lead to our most meaningful work.
When her son, Chris, first entered the special education system, she never imagined their personal experiences would evolve into initiatives touching so many families. While her academic background gave her professional tools, motherhood transformed her purpose.
Co-founding CASEN (Collaborative Advancement for Social-Emotional Needs) with Chris has been incredibly rewarding. Together, they’ve created resources helping neurodivergent children aged 9-13 navigate the digital world safely.
The Mothers of Exceptional Kids (MOEK) Support Group was born from understanding firsthand how isolating it can be to advocate for a child with unique needs. What began as a small initiative has grown into a movement emphasizing advocacy, education, and self-care.
Through MOEK, they’ve created a space where mothers/caregivers share experiences without judgment, gain knowledge about navigating educational systems, and learn that self-care is essential. Their workshops on IEPs, 504 Plans, and intervention programs have equipped mothers/caregivers to secure vital resources for their children.
As a mother of two adult children, she understands this journey’s long arc. The challenges evolve, but so does our capacity to meet them with knowledge and community support.
Thank you, Growth Illustrated, for amplifying their message. To anyone parenting a child with unique abilities: you are not alone, your self-care matters, and you possess more strength than you realize.
Dr. Clark remains committed to expanding MOEK’s reach until every mother has the tools and support to thrive, not just survive, while raising their exceptional children.
Dr. Myava Clark is the co-founder of CASEN and founder of the Mothers of Exceptional Kids (MOEK) Support Group. She holds a Ph.D. in Professional Studies, specializing in Higher Education and Leadership & Administration.
